Italy: Over 200 migrants picked up by Italian Coast Guards
Italian Coast Guards (Guardia Costiera) picked up around 283 migrants, said to be travelling from Libya, on Thursday.
The Guardia Costiera, who located the migrants using a satellite, first found two boats each carrying around 100 migrants, before finding another boat with around 83 people onboard. The Coast Guards brought the migrants ashore at Porto Empedocle.
Over the past week Italian authorities have picked up over 2,500 migrants. This adds to the over 150,000 migrants picked up by Italian authorities in 2014 (excluding numbers from November). Italy's Mare Nostrum search-and-rescue mission recently ended after failing to find a way to reach its monthly €9 million ($11.25 million) running costs.
