Germany: Does this painting show Hitler and Jesus together?
A purported painting of Adolf Hitler next to Jesus Christ has caused a stir in the northern Bavarian town of Hof in Germany, where the painting has hung in Christus Church since 1939.
Former pastor of the evangelical church, Martin Goelkel, dismisses claims that the painting pays homage to Hitler, describing the resemblance as merely coincidental. However, many parishioners have reportedly responded angrily to the painting, calling for its removal.
Iconography depicting Hitler either with or as Jesus Christ was not uncommon under National Socialism, as Hitler styled himself as a “saviour” to the German people. Hitler’s actual religious beliefs are the subject of historical debate.
