Belgium: See BURNT-OUT aftermath of fiery Brussels clashes
At least six burnt cars were left on the streets of central Brussels on Thursday after clashes between anti-austerity protesters and police resulted in at least 14 people being admitted to local hospitals. Authorities dispersed protesters with tear gas and water cannon after demonstrators threw stones and set vehicles and rubbish aflame.
Thursday's demonstration was organised by the trade unions CSC/ACV (Confederate of Christian Trade Union), FGTB/ABVV (General Labour Federation of Belgium) and CGSLB/ACLVB (General Confederation of Liberal Trade Union of Belgium) in opposition to austerity measures including plans to raise the retirement age to 67, wage freezes and cuts to welfare benefits.
The protest is part of a month-long campaign, culminating in a nationwide strike set to take place December 15.
