USA: Ninety-year-old vet faces $500 fine for feeding the homeless
A 90-year-old veteran was cited by police for breaking a municipal law in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Wednesday. Arnold Abbott was providing hot meals for homeless people in public, along with Dwayne Black and Mark Sims, which could result in a €402 ($500) fine and a two-month custodial sentence for the three. It is not illegal to feed homeless people in the city, however, it is regulated by strict public sanitation measures which are enforced by police.
While municipal authorities provide housing for 22 homeless people, Abbott claims that Broward County has a homeless population of around 10,000. Abbott is director of 'Love Thy Neighbour' - an interfaith organisation which provides charitable assistance to homeless people.
