Poland: Farmers dump apples in Warsaw in call for govt action over sanctions
Several hundred fruit farmers called on the Polish government to help utilise apples left surplus as a result of Russian sanctions, during a protest in central Warsaw Tuesday. They dumped apples on the road to make their point. The demonstration follows a reported loss of over 1.5 million tons of apples due to Russian sanctions on the import of certain EU food stuffs. Moscow implemented the ban in response to sanctions imposed on Russia by the West over the Ukraine crisis.
One protester suggested that the apples ought to be converted into energy for use in biogas plants.
The protest began at 10 am local time in the vicinity of the presidential Belvedere Palace. Protesters then moved to the Office of the Prime Minister. At around noon the protesters marched in the direction of the Ministry of Finance. Part of central Warsaw was closed to traffic.
