Ukraine: Zakharchenko leads DPR vote
Self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR/DNR) Prime Minister Aleksandr Zakharchenko was leading exit polls with more than 70 percent of votes cast in Sunday's elections, head of the Central Election Comission of the DPR Roman Lyagin told reporters. Turnout has been estimated at between 70 and 75 percent of eligible voters.
Speaking at the same press conference as Lyagin, Zakharchenko said it was thanks to "respected journalists and observers" that the Kiev government had not interfered in the election. He added that with the elections the DPR has "made its free choice in favour of prosperity and independence."
The Kiev government, the United States and European Union have said they will not recognise the results of the election. Russia has said it will.
