Officers fired gas into the street, and when one group of protesters sat down they were sprayed with pepper spray. One man who refused to move was kicked and beaten repeatedly with a baton.
Protests have taken place throughout the week in several French cities following the death of 21-year old environmental activist Remi Fraisse. Fraisse died during a protest against the building of the Sivens Dam in the south west Tarn region of France. Clashes between riot police and the 2000-strong demonstrators concluded in Fraisse being found dead on October 26 with a large hole in his back, thought to be caused by a police grenade.
