Holy See: New light shed on Michelangelo's frescos and other masterpieces

Holy See (Vatican City State), Vatican City

The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City was illuminated for the first time with a new lighting system made of 7,000 LEDs, Wednesday, illuminating art including frescos by Renaissance artist Michelangelo.

The project is aimed at avoiding damage to the paintings caused by ultraviolet light, since LED lights don't emit UV. Before this system was installed, the light was provided by filtered sun light and artificial lighting placed outside the chapel.

Prof. Arnold Nesselrath of the scientific department of the Vatican Museums, said Michelangelo would likely have been jealous if he had known his art was to be illuminated alongside his predecessors' work.

The project, which is 10 times brighter and saves around 90 percent of energy in comparison with the previous one, cost €1.90 million ($2.40 million) and started in 2011, although the lights have only been installed for the past year and a half. The company behind the project is OSRAM, a German lighting manufacturer.
