Germany: Hundreds march for refugee rights as winter fast approaches
Around 320 refugees and activists marched in Berlin on Saturday, demanding greater rights for refugees and undocumented migrants in the country and opposing the so-called "container villages" planned by authorities in a bid to house growing numbers of refugees and undocumented migrants arriving in the city.
In October the Berlin government announced that it would build six container villages for asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in the German capital, arguing it is unable to provide suitable accommodation for them. Together, the containers - which are expected to cost €43 million ($54 million) - should be able to shelter around 2,400 people.
The first container villages should be ready before Christmas, with the others expected to follow in the first months of 2015. Opponents worry the containers will prove inadequate given the harsh winter conditions in the city.
