Russia: Forty tonnes of illegal Danish FAT stopped by Russian customs
Over 40 tonnes of Danish frozen fat was captured by Russian customs officials at the border town of Shebekino, Sunday October 12.
Two Gazelle vans and a GAZ 3307 truck were stopped by controllers while attempting to cross the border from Ukraine to Russia. When searched, customs officials found 37 cartons containing over a tonnes of lard, later finding 234 polypropylene bags holding 4.5 tonnes of fat in the two vans. Andrei Chuev, officer at Shebekino customs checkpoint, confirmed that overall more than 40 tonnes of animal fat had been found.
Following the one year trade ban on European foodstuffs into Russia, several food smugglers have been caught attempting to defy border control. The most recent incident saw a St Petersburg resident attempt to smuggle 272 kilograms of fish, eight kilograms of cheese and 95 kilograms of various vegetable-based items into Russia from Estonia last Monday.
