USA: "Ebola can be defeated" - UN Deputy Secretary-General
Ebola "can be defeated if we work together in solidarity and with effective coordination," Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson said Friday in New York. His words came as the UN met to discuss the current outbreak of Ebola, which is the largest and deadliest on record.
Despite his optimism, Eliasson announced that only a quarter of the $1 billion (€792.4 million) sought by UN agencies to combat Ebola has been raised. Also speaking at the meeting, Senior UN System Coordinator for Ebola Virus Disease David Nabarro said the challenge posed by the spread of Ebola is a challenge he has "never encountered."
More than 3,900 people are known to have died in the current outbreak of Ebola, primarily in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
