Turkey: Will Turkey use these tanks to help save Kobane from IS?
Tanks, including M48A5T1s, belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) took up positions on a hill overlooking the besieged Syrian border town of Kobane on Monday, as shelling by Islamic State (IS) fighters intensified and stray fire hit Turkish soil.
The tanks are positioned near a Turkish military base just northwest of Kobane. Plumes of smoke rose as shells hit both the eastern and western sides of Kobane.
The M48A5T1 is an upgraded version of the M48 'Patton' tank, of which the Turkish Army has more than 1,400 units. The M48A5T1 has an M68 105 mm main gun, passive night vision, a M60A1 fire control system, and an MTU diesel engine, among other features.
Three people on the Turkish side of the border were injured by stray fire from Syria on Sunday. Also on Sunday, least four people were wounded when a mortar shell fired from Syrian territory during clashes between IS and Kurdish forces hit a house in the Turkish settlement of Suruc.
