France: These Dassault fighter jets are joining air strikes against IS
Three Dassault Rafale fighter jets took off from the Saint Dizier air base on Monday to join the French Air Force mission 'Operation Chammal' against IS (Islamic State) in Iraq.
'Operation Chammal' is the code name for the military operation in Iraq to contain the expansion of the IS forces in cooperation with the Iraqi army. Around 30 military personnel will be joining the jets, set to be stationed in the Arab-Persian Gulf. French President Francois Hollande has stated that the operation will be restricted to air strikes.
The Dessault Rafale is a French-made twin-engine multi-purpose fighter aircraft which can simultaneously perform air supremacy operations and fire interdictions, as well as reconnaissance and airborne nuclear deterrent missions.
