Turkey: See fierce fighting rage on for control of Kobane
A heavy Turkish Army presence was visible as plumes of smoke from multiple explosions could be seen rising from the Turkish side of the border to Syria on Monday.
The explosions came from the Syrian border town of Kobane (Ayn Arab) as heavy fighting in the city was reported between Syrian Kurdish forces and Islamic State (IS). Dozens of Turkish artillery tanks were deployed to an area overlooking Kobane amid fears that IS forces might seize control of the town.
According to reports from the ground, at least 2,000-3,000 Syrian Kurds are fighting IS for control of Kobane amid ongoing US air strikes. UNHCR estimates place the number of Syrians who have crossed the border into Turkey at more than 160,000.
