The principles of international law and territorial integrity are being violated in the middle of Europe, claimed Chancellor Merkel on the German national day on Friday. The German leader referred directly to Ukraine, which is being used as a "sphere of influence", she added.

Half a million people came to Hannover to celebrate 24 years since the reunification of Germany. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck attended the main service at the city's central Marktkirche church and then went to the national holiday ceremony at Hannover Congress Centre.

The German national day falls on the anniversary of the reunification of the former West and East Germany on October 3, 1990. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989.
