Thousands of protesters gathered at Barcelona's Saint James Square on Tuesday to voice their anger over the Constitutional Court's decision to suspend a planned referendum on Catalan independence. Some demonstrators have decided to camp out in the city to protest.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Monday that the referendum would have been "anti-democratic" and said he believed it would violate the rights of Spaniards if it were held. The vote was slated for November 9.

Catalonia has the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Spain, as well as the fourth-highest GDP per capita.
