Hong Kong: City on edge as National Day looms

Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong
September 30, 2014 at 12:48 GMT +00:00 · Published

People were barricading stores and building entrances around central Hong Kong ahead of the Chinese National day (Oct 1), Tuesday, following a weekend of high tensions and civil disturbance. Protesters' numbers have increased in the three major occupied areas around the Central Government Headquarters: Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mong Kok Avenue since demonstrations began on September 26.

Riot police removed from the streets on Monday, with authorities in Hong Kong stating that riot police are not needed as long as demonstrators keep protests within the boundaries of the law. The chief executive of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying, has also promise that firearms and rubber bullets would not be used by security forces and that the People's Liberation Army would not be called in.

Protesters have staged a number of sit-ins in Hong Kong in the past, but the current protests are among the largest the Special Administrative Region of China has seen in decades, with reports pointing to around 80,000 people gathering on Monday.
