Hundreds of extreme piercing enthusiasts flocked to the Bang Neow Shrine in Phuket to get their bodies pierced with all kinds of objects, from long swords to hand guns, Sunday.
Part of the Phuket Vegaterian Festival, an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese Calender, Thai citizens of Chinese ancestry observe and participate in all kinds of rites, including the piercing tradition. The sacred rituals include trials such as walking barefooted over hot coal and ascending ladders made from blades.
For a 10 day period, participants follow a strict vegan diet for spiritual cleansing and perform sacred rituals at Chinese shrines.
