Netherlands: Meet the amputee behind the LEG lamp
Fifty-three-year-old amputee Leo Bonten was busy at work in the Dutch town of Spijkenisse on Sunday, as he finalised plans for raising funds for an improved prosthesis: selling a lamp made from his amputated leg.
Bonten broke his right leg in an accident. A subsequent bacterial infection resulted in the leg being amputated. However, Bonten wanted to keep the amputated leg, which he was eventually allowed to do. According to Bonten, he hopes an "eccentric billionaire" will buy the leg lamp because it is "the only leg lamp in the world."
The leg was preserved by pathologist Frank van de Goot, while the lamp itself was created by designer Willem Schaperkotter. Bonten initially put the lamp for sale on Internet auction site eBay with an opening bid €100,000 ($126,727), but the listing was removed as eBay prohibits the sale of human remains or body parts.
