Italy: Russian billionaire Arkady Rotenberg’s Rome hotel hit by assets freeze
Berg Luxury Hotel, owned by Russian billionaire Arkady Rotenberg, appeared to remain open for business in central Rome, Tuesday, following the announcement by Italian authorities of a freeze of €30 million ($39 million) in Rotenberg’s assets.
Bank accounts and properties across Italy are also said to be among the frozen assets. Police were reportedly en route to seal off the billionaire's properties in Sardinia on Tuesday.
Rotenberg, who had been sanctioned earlier in March and blacklisted in July by the United States and the European Union, is believed to hold a personal fortune of €2.6 billion ($3.4 billion). The billionaire is said to among the most influential businessmen in Russia, owning 51 percent of the SGM Group, 50 per cent of construction company TPS Avia and 26 percent of road construction company Mostotrest. Rotenberg is also the president of hockey club Dynamo Moscow.
