Turkey: US launch airstrikes on Syrian soil, thousands pour through border
Hundreds of Kurdish refugees were seen crossing into Turkey from Syria at the Kobane/Aran border checkpoint on Tuesday, as US military and partner nations began carrying out airstrikes on Syrian soil.
Some people on the Syrian side of the border were denied entry into Turkey, and they could be seen waving placards beyond the fence.
The exodus comes in the midst of violent confrontations between Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Islamic State (formerly ISIS) fighters in the area. US airstrikes in Syria's Raqqa province were confirmed by Pentagon spokesman Admiral John Kirkby, who revealed that the area was struck by US fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk Cruise missiles launched from as far away as the Red Sea.
