Turkey: First US airstrikes hit Syria, tensions at border skyrocket
US military and partner nations launched the biggest military operation against the self-proclaimed Islamic State, Tuesday, carrying out airstrikes on multiple locations in Syria's Raqqa Province.
The border town of Tal Abyad was reportedly among the areas struck by fighter jets, bombers and Tomahawk Cruise missiles launched from as far away as the Red Sea.
A local Turkish man, Mahmout, waited at the Akcakale/Tal Abyad border crossing, hoping to bring his Syrian wife and 3 year old daughter through.
He said he had sent her into Syria 10 days ago to see her parents, but the Turkish authorities would not let her back through and he is fearful that if she remains stuck in Tal Abyad, she will become a victim of the US airstrikes.
Pentagon spokesman Admiral John Kirkby confirmed the strike in a statement to press. This is the first US air assault on Syrian territory and is yet to receive the formal consent of the Syrian government.
