USA: Watch NASA go nuts as MAVEN reaches Mars
NASA flight controllers celebrated NASA's MAVEN spacecraft entry into orbit around Mars after a 711 million kilometre (442 million mile) journey in Littleton, Colorado on Sunday. Short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission, the $671 million (€522 million) MAVEN will study Mars' atmosphere.
Unlike the more famous Curiosity rover, MAVEN will not land on Mars, but orbit around the planet, collecting data for at least one Earth year. It began its journey to the Red Planet in November 2013.
MAVEN will also have some company in the skies above Mars, as India's Mars Orbiter Mission is expected to arrive on Wednesday.
