
Canada: Famous district of Montreal set ablaze
Cours Le Royer, a famous building in the Montreal tourist district, was ablaze Saturday afternoon, causing a cloud of smoke that could be seen from over 10 kilometres (six miles) away. The fire broke out at the corner of of St-Paul Street and St-Laurent Street, a famous district of the city that housed the first hospital.
A huge safety perimeter was set-up in the historical district all the afternoon to avoid further damage. Dozens of fire-fighters were at the scene, battling the fire into the evening.
The blaze is believed to have started around 15.00 local time (19.00 GMT) during a barbecue on a patio and then spread to the entire roof. The fire has hospitalised four fire-fighters and one policeman due to smoke inhalation.
