UN: WHO Director-General hails UN plan to fight Ebola
The outbreak of Ebola currently affecting West Africa is a "threat to international peace and security," the UN Security Council declared Thursday in New York. The Security Council announced the creation of an "emergency UN mission" to deal with the Ebola outbreak that would work in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), which drew a record 130 co-sponsors.
After the meeting, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said the number of supporters of the resolution "gives us hope that the global community understands the severity of this outbreak." She added that "no one country alone, no one organisation can deal with the threat of Ebola."
The meeting was the first time the Security Council had met to discuss a public health crisis. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he will convene a "high-level meeting" in late September to discuss the next steps in responding to Ebola.
At least 2,600 people have died in the current West African Ebola outbreak, making it the deadliest known outbreak of the disease in history.
