Edinburgh was braced for the Scottish vote on independence in Edinburgh on Thursday, with 'yes' and 'no' signs seen scattered across the Scottish capital. Polling will open across Scotland at 07:00 local time (06:00 GMT) and close at 22:00 local time (21:00 GMT).

Ninety-seven percent of eligible Scots are registered to vote in today's referendum on whether or not to leave the United Kingdom and become fully independent. Voters will must answer either yes or no to one question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

Official national results are expected to be announced on Friday morning, though regional results could start coming as of 02:00 local time (01:00 GMT).
