Italy: Dozens of newborns saved from migrant ship docked in Palermo
Dozens of newborns were rescued from a Maltese Merchant vessel carrying around 415 migrants fleeing Syria, Palestine and Sicily in the Palermo docks, Tuesday. Among the migrants there were two pregnant women and a total of 97 children, including 11 newborns.
The migrants boarded the merchant ship after being found and rescued adrift in the Channel of Sicily. On the dock the migrants were greeted and taken care of by the Provincial Health officers and the Italian Red Cross with extra help of Caritas volunteers.
Four Egyptian migrants were arrested for alleged smuggling activity aboard of one of the stranded ships carrying 244 Syrian migrants.
One of the migrants said that he sold all of his personal belongings, house and car to pay 15 thousand dollars in order to be able to flee the war with his family.
