Romania: Indebted man sets himself on fire over tax dispute
A 45-year-old local council member of Bacau County set himself on fire in his car outside the town hall building in Onesti on Monday. The incident occurred after an alleged failed attempt to negotiate tax payment with the revenue service.
One fire unit was dispatched at the scene and shortly contained the hazard. A police investigation into the incident is underway.
The deceased man reportedly owed around €12,500 ($16,142) back in tax payments to the Revenue Service, and purportedly decided to immolate himself after a final attempt to negotiate the payment. Some of the man’s properties had reportedly been seized despite the debtor’s pleas for clemency. The man, who has not yet been named by authorities, had repeatedly threatened to set himself on fire.
