Ukraine: Sporadic battles threaten ceasefire as Mariupol sees skirmishes
A Ukrainian army checkpoint located at the eastern entrance of Mariupol came under fire on Saturday night, despite the declared ceasefire of Friday between Kiev and Donbass forces. Militias claim they responded after Kiev troops struck their positions with artillery. A woman died and a gas station suffered heavy damage as the skirmishes went on.
Local reports describe the situation inside Mariupol as tense, as the soldiers deployed at the checkpoint won't allow the residents to abandon the city. The OSCE observer team already announced the intention to head to the checkpoint on Sunday morning to inspect the situation.
Envoys from Ukraine, Russia, anti-Kiev self-proclaimed regions and Europe's OSCE agreed on the terms of the ceasefire in Minsk. According to the United Nations, around 2,600 people have died since Kiev launched its military offensive in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions in April.
