Ukraine: Ceasefire-defying shells hit Mariupol's east
Heavy shelling left the streets of Vostochny District of Mariupol in ruins Sunday, despite the ceasefire being declared on Friday between Kiev and Donbass forces. The artillery fire was heard in the east of Mariupol during Saturday evening, it is not clear whether the shelling represents an end to the ceasefire or simply a localised outburst of violence.
During the shelling a gas station and nearby shopping building were heavily damaged, with the station bursting into flames after a series of explosions. Several buses parked nearby the gas station also suffered damaged, with windows being shattered.
Envoys from Ukraine, Russia, anti-Kiev self-proclaimed regions and Europe's OSCE agreed on the terms of the ceasefire in Minsk. According to the United Nations, around 2,600 people have died since Kiev launched its military offensive in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions in April.
