Greece: EU flag burns in anti-austerity trade union protest
Communists set aflame the flag of the European Union as trade unions staged large demonstrations against austerity measures, taxes and job dismissals at the opening of the 79th International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki on Saturday.
Several Greek labour unions gathered together from different squares and marched to the convention centre where the trade fair is being held. The Thessaloniki International Fair is believed to hold considerable political weight and is traditionally where the Greek PM outlines his government's policy for the coming twelve months.
Around 5000 police units were deployed on the streets of Thessaloniki to prevent possible clashes.
