Ukraine, Kiev
September 4, 2014 at 14:22 GMT +00:00 · Published

Protesters gathered in front of the Verkhovna Rada building in the centre of Kiev, Thursday, calling for "lustration" of the Ukrainian government. Lustration means the purge of government officials once affiliated with the Communist system of the former USSR. In the context of Thursday's protest, the term applies to those affiliated to the Party of Regions, the Communist Party and any political group that is seen as sympathetic to Russia. Many of the protesters were seen wearing far-right symbols, including the Right Sector logo.

On August 14, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a bill on government lustration. Protesters are calling for it to be signed in to law.
