      Ukraine: Battle rages over Donetsk airport

      Fierce fighting broke out over the Donetsk Sergey Prokofiev International Airport near Donetsk on Monday night and continued on into Tuesday morning. Flares and brief flashes could be seen on the horizon as anti-Kiev forces struggled to push back Ukrainian soldiers from the area. At the time of writing the airfield is still contested.

      One of the airport's terminals was built specially for the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship. On Monday the Ukrainian army retreated from Lugansk International Airport after a protracted battle with anti-Kiev forces.
