Interviewer: Fine?

Pupil: Yes.

Lubov Zhukova, a teacher at School Number 20 in central Lugansk, was one of the first teachers in Eastern Ukraine to open up her classroom on Monday for the first day of term. Due to heavy government shelling and violence on the ground, many schools throughout Donetsk and Lugansk regions have remained close.

One of Zhukova’s students answered questions on his first day of second grade, saying he was happy to start second grade, but didn’t know what the future would hold.

The majority of schools in the west of Ukraine have opened for the autumn term as usual.
