Turkey: Clashes erupt after authorities demolish PKK statue, two dead
Supporters gathered close to the site of the Mahsum Kormaz statue removed by authorities in Lice on Tuesday. Security forces stood guard in the area following clashes that erupted close to the site. A soldier and protester were shot dead and at least two others injured.
Mahsum Kormaz was one of the founders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and was the organisations first commander. He is remembered by PKK supporters for launching the organisations armed struggle for independence in 1984, with August 15 of the same year marking the beginning of the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. He was killed by Turkish military forces in March, 1986.
