UN: UN calls for Gaza ceasefire extension POOL
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry spoke in New York on Monday about the need for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to lead to an extension of the current ceasefire, just hours before the current temporary deal was due to expire.
Speaking during a meeting of the UN Security Council, Serry expressed the need for a durable ceasefire which would make "substantive progress" to the current situation in Gaza. The Special Coordinator concluded that a two-state solution was the "only viable solution" to the conflict.
The Egyptian government confirmed a 24-hour extension to the current ceasefire between on Monday evening, one hour before the truce was due to expire.
