USA: National Guard gear up for Ferguson incursion
Members of the National Guard geared up in St. Louis, Monday, after Missouri Governor Jay Nixon gave the go ahead for troops to be deployed in Ferguson. Nixon's decision follows unrest in Ferguson sparked by the August 9 shooting of unarmed African-American teenager Michael Brown by white police officer, Darren Wilson.
National Guard troops could be seen preparing to leave for Ferguson amongst Light Medium Tactical vehicle and HMMWV Humvees, vehicles both used in the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.
Nixon's choice to use heavily armed riot police in dealing with the protests comes as Amnesty International has decided to deploy a delegation to Ferguson to observe the situation. It is the first time the organisation has ever deployed an investigative group of this kind on US soil.
The National Guard arrived in Ferguson earlier on Monday, and their presence continues to grow in the area.
