Ukraine: Shakhtersk shelling guts local supermarkets
Residents woke up to empty supermarket shelves in Shakhtersk on Sunday, following targeted army shelling on the east Ukrainian city.
The ongoing conflict with Kiev forces has limited imports of goods into the city; causing many stores to close, and prompting militia and owners to open grocery stores where locals who have remained are able to purchase some products. Reportedly, alcohol found in empty stores was disposed of by self-defence forces in order to maintain discipline in the city.
On Saturday, Aleksandr Zakharchenko, Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, said that militia are ready to commit to a ceasefire to prevent further humanitarian disaster in Donbass. Kiev has said it would only agree to a ceasefire if self-defence forces agreed to surrender their arms.
