Turkey: Ankara votes in landmark presidential election
Voters headed to cast their ballot at Betül Can High School in Ankara on Sunday as Turkey's first direct presidential elections opened at 0800 local time (0500 GMT).
Election polls so far tip current Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Justice and Development Party (AK), as favourite among the candidates. Candidates going up against Erdogan are diplomat and academic, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and Kurdish politician, Selahattin Demirtas, of the Democratic People's party (HDP).
In order to become president in the first round, the winning candidate needs to win by an absolute majority. If none of the candidates receive more than 50 percent of the vote, a second round will be held to determine the country's president on August 24.
Polls will close today at 1700 local time (1400 GMT).
