Bulgaria: Severe flooding rips through Bulgarian villages
Severe flooding destroyed a major road and bridge in the village of Hrabrino after more than 12 hours of heavy rain in central and western Bulgaria early on Friday morning. The waters, reaching 60 litres per square metre in some areas, caused the collapse of bridges and flooded roads. Bulgarian officials were forced to declare a state of emergency in several villages throughout the country.
A section of Hrabino's main road collapsed and fell into the river running through the settlement, with major damages done to a bridge in the Plovdiv province village. Rescue teams worked throughout the night to secure damaged sites in the capital of Sofia and surrounding villages affected by the flooding. Where possible, drinking water was supplied to villagers, but emergency services were reportedly unable to reach thousands of people living in Hrabrino, Lilkovo, Plochnik, Izvor, Dedevo, Boykovo and Sitovo due to infrastructure damages.
The village of Goliamo Peshtene in northwestern Bulgaria was evacuated earlier in the day due to the threat of a local dam bursting, while tourists have been warned against traveling to the affected regions over the weekend.
