Spain: Spanish PM and Catalan leader meet amid independence row
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy met with head of the Catalan regional government and leader of the Catalan nationalist party, Artur Mas, at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace on Wednesday to discuss the Catalan referendum on independence.
Today’s meeting is the first time that Rajoy and Mas have met since the Spanish government said it would issue an injunction to block the vote in November from going ahead, which had been agreed upon by the Catalan independence movement in December 2013.
Catalan leaders claim that the move for a referendum came after talks on renegotiating Catalonia’s institutional status and financial pact with Spain broke down in December 2012. Regional government polling places support for independence among Catalans at 45 percent.
