Thousands of protesters poured onto Batasan road in Quezon City on Monday, gathering opposite the Philippines House of Congress where President Benigno Aquino III was pronouncing his fifth 'state of the nation' address.

Protesters burned an effigy of President Aquino and blocked off part of Commonwealth Avenue - the Philippines' widest road. Police responded by spraying protesters with hoses and setting up barricades. 10,000 police officers and a detachment of soldiers were deployed to secure the area. No arrests have yet been reported.

The crowd demanded Aquino's impeachment and prosecution along with his political allies for their alleged involvement in corruption scandals. Among other things these allegations include misuse of public funds as part of the Disbursement Acceleration Program, and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the USA, which protesters say is unconstitutional.
