Around 52 migrants identifying themselves as sub-Saharan African were detained by Italian authorities on Friday, after the boat they were travelling in was reported to be in distress by a neighbouring vessel in the Strait of Sicily. The operation brought the migrants onto the Peluso ship, which then docked in the port of Porto Empedocles.

On an average day in 2014, Italy picks up around 300 people from 10 migrant boats. According to Frontex, the numbers trying to reach Europe from North Africa is at a record high.

Italy is seeking support from its North European partners within the Schengen zone to police its waters, the estimated cost of which is €8 million ($10.74 million) per month. European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, has asked for other EU nations to provide vessels to assist Italy's operation.
