A boat carrying 19 dead and 569 living migrants arrived in Sicily on Sunday after being picked up by Italian naval vessels. Many of the people on board ship are believed having died from suffocation.
The survivors, originating from North Africa, were saved by naval vessels belonging to Italian and Maltese naval vessels, as well as two passing merchant ships.
The dead are believed to have died from suffocation caused by inhalation of engine fumes, an incident that accounted for the similar deaths of 30 migrants last months.
