Russia: MASSIVE hole turns up in Siberia's 'End of the World'
:
A giant hole in the ground appeared in Siberia on Thursday, with scientists baffled as to where it came from. The hole on the Yamal Peninsula in Russia, known as the ‘end of the world, is just under 80 metres wide (262 feet), it’s depth remaining a mystery.
Several speculations have been made on the source of the enormous crater. One theory is that a mixture of gas, salt and water created an underground explosion. As the area surrounding the hole has some of Russia’s largest gas reserves and is less than 20 miles from Bovanenkovo, the country’s biggest gas field, scientists are still researching the possibility.
Dr. Chris Fogwill of the University of New South Wales in Australia suggested that the hole may have been formed by a ‘pingo’, a large soil-covered slab of ice that could have melted, leaving the expansive hole.
A spokesperson for Russia’s Emergency Ministry stated that the depression definitely did not come from a meteorite
