Palestine: Gazans mourn as Israeli air strikes resume
The bodies of people slain during the Israeli bombardment of Gaza were paraded through the streets on Tuesday during a lull in military operations. Funeral services have been disrupted due to the danger of public gatherings during hostilities.
According to Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qudra, the death toll among Palestinians has reached 193 at the time of writing. In addition to the human casualties, 281 dwellings have so far been destroyed by Israeli bombing.
Israel adopted a ceasefire early on Tuesday morning as a precursor to negotiations with Hamas, however Hamas claimed it was not officially invited to a ceasefire. Hamas also stipulated that it would not agree to a ceasefire without key concessions such as a prisoner exchange. An Israeli civilian at Erez military base was killed by mortar fire from Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades on Tuesday afternoon, and Israeli air strikes on Gaza resumed shortly afterwards.
