
Cuba: Putin announces Cuba’s $35 billion debt to Russia written off
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Cuban President Raúl Castro in Havana and signed a raft of cooperative agreements on Friday.
The documents deal with cooperation in international information security, energy, manufacturing, culture and healthcare.
Putin spoke about a number of energy projects, plans to develop Cuba's power plants and help search for offshore oil wells. He also reiterated Russia's intention to write off 90% of Cuba's old debt. Lastly he expressed an interest in deploying ground stations in Cuba for Russia's GLONASS global navigation system. .
Putin is currently on a six-day tour of Latin America, he will also visit Argentina and Brazil, where he will watch the football World Cup final and attend a summit of the BRICS bloc.
