Slovenia: Lavrov urges EU to remove barriers for South Stream
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called for the full realisation of the South Stream gas pipeline project during his visit to Maribor, Tuesday. Lavrov met with Slovenian President Borut Pahor and Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec and gave a press conference afterwards.
In his speech Lavrov urged the EU to "remove any artificial barriers to the project as it would strengthen Europe’s energy security." Problems emerged when Brussels said Gazprom’s role in the construction project did not conform to EU regulations. Lavrov labelled the move by the EU to retroactively apply requirements, as unfair and in contravention to normal practice.
In the course of his visit to Slovenia, Lavrov also took part in the opening of a museum at Maribor which had been the site of a Nazi concentration camp, placing a wreath at the peace monument at Pobrezhie memorial park.
