Italy: Bustling Milan ground to a halt by floods
Milan was flooded on Tuesday when the river Seveso burst its banks. Heavy rainfall caused the river to swell dramatically and flow over into the city's Isola district.
Traffic in the district was immobilised by water up to 40cm (15.7 in) deep, and powerful winds blew over trees, blocking some streets. Around 2,000 homes had their electricity cut off.
Flood defences were breached in the same area in 2004.
