Japan: Faithful hounds live out golden years in canine care home
A new nursing home in Tokyo threw open its doors to ageing dogs on Wednesday in an attempt to provide elderly canines with a retirement plan. The luxuriously equipped retirement home offers its animal friends 24-hour medical care, gym and swimming pool access, as well as an opulent hair and nail salon.
Aeonpet, a part of major shopping mall operator Aeon, launched their concept in a bid to deal with the situation caused by an ageing Japanese population and their need to have someone take care of their pets. As well as providing the animals with short-term healthcare and a luxurious lifestyle, the home also offers ways in which to reduce canine dementia and comforting care during the final stage of life.
While the cost of the animal's residence depends on dog size and breed, the price for one month in the home is the equivalent of $1,000 (€700).
